Drug Detox Facts.
What Is Drug Detox?
The removal of residual drugs from a persons body.
Many products on the marketplace claim to detoxify the body of drug residuals, however, the effectiveness and potential health related complications of these products remains questionable.
The safest way to undergo drug detox is at a qualified treatment facility. Medical personnel specializing in addiction treatment will access the addict’s condition and diagnose any psychiatric or medical needs present.
Once the addict has been evaluated, the medical team will then develop a drug detox plan especially for their individual needs that can greatly reduce the symptoms of withdrawal.
In some cases, there may be no symptoms associated with withdrawal at all.
Certain individuals may be able to participate in a rapid drug detox, which is basically an accelerated protocol that can be used where there are no outstanding medical or psychological issues.
What Does A Drug Detox Treatment Entail?
Generally offered as a part of the service of a regular substance treatment facility, drug detox has a special focus on the medical and psychological condition of the addict.
Often the addict will require medical treatment during the process or encounter mental health issues. The length of time the drug detox program will require is dependant upon these factors as well, along with the severity of the addiction.
The drug detox program is typically over when the addict is deemed to be medically stable and free of withdrawal symptoms. Follow up care is generally a requirement, with a strong focus on the psychological needs of the addict.
Is Drug Detox A Stand Alone Treatment?
No. Most drug detox programs are simply one part of the services offered by a drug treatment facility.
Typical follow up after a drug detox is implementation into the drug rehab program offered at the same treatment facility. Extended services after a drug detox can include drug relapse prevention, and programs to help the family of the addict to recover as well.
The ultimate goal is for the addict to exit the treatment center completely free of drugs and all withdrawal symptoms and ready to become a fully functional member of society again.
